In the north of Latvia, in the place, where the most picturesque river of Northern Vidzeme, the Salaca, flows into the Baltic sea, is situated the town the whereabouts of which are precisely characterized by its name- Salacgrīva. This town is the last settlement of the ancient Liivs in Vidzeme. As a hamlet Salacgrīva began to develop in1870, due to the coastal trade. Salacgrīva got the rights of the town in1928.
In 1998 the town of Salacgrīva and the civil parish of Salaca joined together.
Salacgrīva together with its rural territory is outstanding for its splendid and manifold natural resources, 3 salmon rivers - the Salaca is of European significance. All the territory of the local municipality finds itself in the area of the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, the main task of which is to take care of the landscape, as well as to protect the ecosystems and the species of genetic diversity. The office of this organization is in Salacgrīva, in a lately restored warehouse, and here you can get all the needed information in the Salacgrīva Tourist Information Centre (saltic@latnet.lv), have a look at a historic photo exhibition dealing with the past of Salacgrīva and its neighborhood as well as make use of these interesting from the point of view of architecture premises for organizing discussions or even a conference.
In the territory of the Salacgrīva local municipality there are 3 schools, the secondary school is in Salacgrīva. There are 2 kindergartens as well, one-in Salacgrīva, the other - in Svētciems.
People who love nature can have a look at the valley of the river Salaca, at the Liivs sacrificial caves on the Svētupe, at Veczemju Red cliffs and the stony seaside of Vidzeme as well as Randu meadows, the boulder islet in the sea at Svētciems and the Niedrāju-Pilkas marshland. In autumn it is worth looking at lamprey weirs on the Salaca and the Svētupe. It will be interesting to see the ceramics wall panel with all Latvian lighthouses on it in the foyer of the enterprise ''Brīvais vilnis”, the museum of Salacgrīva and the castle mould, from which you will enjoy only characteristic for Salacgrīva views.
 Thanks to the favorable geographic position of the local municipality- the river, the sea and VIA BALTICA highway which crosses the whole territory, various kinds of entrepreneurship have developed.  Salacgrīva is the industrial centre of the Limbaži district. In the rural territory of the municipality the main occupation of the population is connected with farming, cattle-breeding and woodworking. The most successful farm-stead specialize in cattle-breeding, seed corn and herb growing. An important place is being taken by services- shops, cafes. In the spring of 2002 a 3- star hotel will be opened.

An outstanding feature of Salacgrīva is its port - it is the only functioning port of Limbaži region.Reloading of timber products and fishing industry loads take place at the port. It's planned to start the dry load service in 2002. The ships with draught up to 5.6 m come into Salacgrīvas port . There is a small yacht pier there. It is not only the place for yachts to land, it is a popular place for recreation of the local people and a place of sightseeing for the guests of the town.  Ltd "Salacgrīva-95"(www.salacgriva-95.lv) is one of the biggest and most experienced enterprises of Latvia, specializing in producing tinned fish. Subsidiary services such as a customs warehouse, woodworking, stevedore service are developed as well. At present Ltd. "Salacgrīva-95" employs about 500 workers.

Ltd "Brīvais Vilnis" (www.brivaisvilnis.lv ) is one of the biggest and most developed fish processing enterprises in Latvia. The main product of Ltd. "Brīvais vilnis" is canned fish (about 35 kinds). Dominating is "Riga sprats in oil”.

Sports and entertainment

The Salacgrīva Fishermen's park is waiting for those who are keen on sports, each year the second Saturday in July is the Fishermen's Festival known all over Latvia.
