Ainaži is a calm Vidzeme seaside town. In the north it is close to the neighboring Estonia.   Ainaži finds itself on extremely favorable crossroads - the motor road VIA BALTICA and the highway Ainaži - Valmiera, „Ziemeļu stīga” („The Northern string"). The origin of the name of the town comes from the Liivs language ’’ainagi"- meaning "lonely". The name of Ainaži has been mentioned for the first time in 1564, but the name of the town was acquired in 1926. Since the middle of the previous century we can trace in the history of Ainaži the years of growth and prosperity, mainly connected with the ship building, naval college and port. The exhibitions in the Ainaži naval memorial museum as well as Ainaži fire-fighters museum show different historical periods in the town.  Ainaži as a provincial town is interesting with its wooden architecture, various nature objects and monuments related to the history of civilization, with its clean and tidy beach and Randu meadows, where you can find a memorial sign to K. Valdemārs "Baltā saule", made by the sculptor V.Titāns in 1998.This sign symbolically marks the sea routes of the Latvian seamen on the world map. The wealth of Ainaži and its neighboring territory is its woods, wetlands as well as the picturesque Salaca with its Red Cliffs. The Ainaži weather meteorological data collecting station is one of the oldest in Latvia; it started its activities in 1896. The station has an international significance because its observations are being included in the weather forecast for Europe. Since 1994 there is an electric power station with 2 wind generators (the first ones in the whole Baltic). It produces about 2,5mil.kwh of electric power which is let into the joint power grid. After the renewal of the independence of Latvia a new building of the border control and the customs, which meets the requirements of the present day technology, was built. The Ainaži Town Council has established cooperation contacts with Haadameste Town Committee in Estonia and these contacts are being strengthened even more, taking part in common projects. Ainaži participates in the project "North Livonia" the realization of which will develop the business tourism in this region.  In Ainaži the small entrepreneurship is developed, it is mainly logging and wood working; there is a wide net of trade and services offered.  In the cultural life of the town street festivities have become a tradition, ball room musicians meet each August, the international folk dance festival "Sudmaliņas” take place in Ainaži.

The picturesque neighborhood, the stillness and the sea are the greatest values, which the town can offer to tourists, who are going to drop in at that small town, when traveling along the highway of the European significance.
